  • Effect of smartphone dependency on use of smartphones while driving

  • Jiho YeoM.S. Thesis2015
  • Distracted driving is an important risk factor for traffic accidents. Especially, cellphone use while driving has become the leading cause of distraction in recent years. There has been research to determine why drivers use their cellphones while driving, but little research has been conducted to consider changed usage patterns of mobile devices with the advent of smartphones and their extended functions. One noteworthy change is the addictiveness and dependency of smartphones. For this reason, the goal of this study was to investigate the ef-fect of smartphone dependency on the use of smartphones while driving. A survey of 948 Korean drivers as-sessed smartphone dependency as well as driver experience of calling and manipulating a smartphone while driving, demographic characteristics, and risk perception. Based on the survey, the effect of smartphone de-pendency on the use of smartphones was examined using factor analysis and binary logistic regression. Results reveal that drivers who had high smartphone dependency were more likely to use their smartphones while driv-ing; the effect of smartphone dependency on manipulation was more influential than it was on calling. The re-sults provide compelling evidence that the smartphone’s addictive usage patterns affect use of smartphones while driving, especially in view of manipulation. These findings can foster an understanding of human psy-chology about why people use smartphones while driving, and can provide a stepping stone to formulate future policies for traffic safety.
